  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is way off base with flying flags at half-staff for Whitney Houston.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has made has made an error in judgement in ordering flags flown at half-staff at state government buildings due to the death of Whitney Houston. Marking the passing of pop stars by flying flags at half-staff is horribly wrong. This is an honor that should be reserved for those who have sacrificed for their country.

Whitney Houston was paid obscene amounts of money for singing, something she liked to do. Getting paid to sing is great work if you can get it, but it is not a sacrifice and not a service to one’s country.

Flying flags at half-staff for pop stars diminishes the potency of the gesture for those who really deserve it. Houston is not a hero and does not deserve such an honor. Chris Christie is way off base with flying flags at half-staff for Whitney Houston.

  Greenway is rather dreary. The memory of Rose Kennedy deserves better.

I am livid over the amount of money paid to the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy heads. While pleased that state Transportation Secretary Richard A. Davey told officials at the Conservancy that they should figure a way to operate without government funds, I would prefer we find a way to make the change in months rather than years.

These excessive salaries would not be so upsetting if the park was a bit more dazzling. But the Greenway is not in the same league as the other premier Boston parks. It is a disappointment compared to many of the parks that make up Boston’s Emerald Necklace. Rose Kennedy should be memorialized by a more appealing installation.

The Greenway is a constant reminder of the catastrophe that is the Big Dig, so at the very least I wish the park was a bit less dreary. Let’s at least spruce the place up. Even better, let’s just build a casino on the site.

• Bradley Jay: ‘Pray That The The New Downtown Crossing Hi-Rise Really Happens.’
  It appears that within the year construction may start on a massive new hi-rise in Boston’s downtown. I’s about time.

I love Boston. And I am always deeply saddened when something happens to diminish my beloved city. Things like the decline of the formerly great MBTA get me down. And remember the real Filene’s basement? I was heartsick the day the Washington St. icon closed. To add ugliness to injury, there is that obscene hole in the ground next door that kills the spirit in the heart of Boston.

Good news. Three years ago New York developer Vornado Realty Trust left a gap where Filene’s once resided, but now they have a plan in the works to restart construction on a building that would join the Hancock and the Prudential Towers as kings of Boston’s skyline. Good. Because the current blight on that spot vacuums the spirit out of The Crossing like a black hole vacuum’s light.
It appears that construction may start within the year. I hope so. It will improve the skyline, the economy, and the mood of all who cringe when they walk the current gauntlet of despair. Pray that the proposed building goes up in record time.

Now if only we could get a little good news from the MBTA.
